ENVIRONMENTAL RESTORATION

SOME RESTORED ENVIRONMENTS

EXAMPLE ENVIRONMENTS WE HAVE RESTORED

“We strongly believe that we only borrow the land and have an obligation to hand it back to nature in an even better state than when work began.”

It is now generally recognised that quarrying is an activity that contributes to rather than detracts from biodiversity. The nature of our work provides opportunities – during working as well as restoration – to create new habitats, some of which would not otherwise have been possible. The environment is a prominent aspect of the Cullimore business and operations. You can have total trust and confidence in the fact that we are committed to maintaining the highest standards of environmental performance. Cullimore’s has long adopted the belief that despoliation of the landscape is not an inevitable consequence of aggregate extraction.

Indeed we have been working to our own environmental agenda, for a long time before stringent environmental policies came into force across the country. Worked-out land at Ashton Keynes has been beautifully landscaped to provide a haven for wildlife and a possibility in the future to  accommodate leisure activities. Cullimore’s treat this responsibility very seriously and as part of an on-going programme further areas will be similarly restored once mineral has been extracted. So successfull have our first restorations been, that a number of prized awards have been made to us for our  efforts. As early as 1974 Wiltshire County Council acknowledged our far reaching plans to establish a small bird sanctuary at Somerford Keynes.

Between then and 1991 at least 50,000 trees were planted on the site, leading to the joint award of the Cooper-Heyman Cup in 1990 for the best restored gravel pit for Nature Conservation in Great Britain. In 1988 we received an award from the Sand and Gravel Association for restoring 18 acres of farmland at Kent End Farm. Restoration is still being carried out with more areas set aside for conservation and further tree planting. Further schemes near completion include areas for water skiing and boating.

Interested parties can be shown around the restored sites through prior arrangement with Moreton F Cullimore, Managing Director, via Georgie Emery, PA to MD.
